In 1683, the Maryland General Assembly passed “An Act for Advancing the Trade of Tobacco”
to promote town formation in the county and assure the colony’s success.
One of these towns was located on the Scorton property, and became known as the Town of London. Composed of 100 lots divided into approximately one acre each, the act required a lot purchaser to
build a minimum of one 20-foot structure on the property or forfeit the property (Cox et al. 1997).
